The Mettray Colony as Seen by Jean Genet

The Colonie Agricole Pénitentiaire de Mettray was an important signpost in the development of modern disciplinary space. The writings of Jean Genet act as a set of burglar’s tools, opening up new ways of understanding not only Mettray but also the modern world—Foucault’s carceral regime—in a larger sense. Modernity is seen to operate through a conceptual delamination that, in the end, is far more secure than the walls of any prison.
