Creole Urbanism

Searching for an Urban Future in the Flooded Streets of New Orleans

Jacob A. Wagner

University of Missouri-Kansas City

The destruction of New Orleans will be met with many acts of (re)creation that will help not only to mend the physical city but also the very soul of the people and the place. This essay introduces the concept of "creole urbanism" to describe the city’s unique urban culture and built environment.

Key Words: New Orleans • Hurricane Katrina • creole urbanism • carnival of memory • streets as public spaces
